The single most important rule after permanent makeup is simple: keep the treated area clean, dry, and hands-off. I’m saying that upfront because most “bad heals” start with touching, over-washing, sweating heavily, or picking. In London, ON, summer heat and quick weather swings can make swelling, sweat, and sun exposure more likely, so planning your first week matters. This guide covers what I generally recommend day by day for brows and eyeliner so you protect your pigment, lower your risk of irritation, and avoid extra follow-up visits.
Day 0 to Day 2: sterile saline, pat dry, thin ointment
Right after your appointment, the goal is to calm the area and keep it clean without soaking it. I generally recommend gentle cleansing with sterile saline, then patting dry with clean gauze or a lint-free pad. If I’ve recommended an ointment, use only a paper-thin layer. More is not better. Thick ointment can trap heat and bacteria and can soften scabbing too much.
Expect the pigment to look darker and sharper at first. That’s normal. Mild tenderness, tightness, and a little swelling can happen, especially for eyeliner. If you notice swelling or bruising, a cold compress can help during the first 24 hours. Keep it gentle and keep it clean.
Quick do and don’t for the first 48 hours: Do cleanse gently and pat dry. Don’t rub, pick, or “check it” in the mirror every ten minutes. And don’t let shower spray hit the area directly.
Days 3 to 10: flaking is normal, sweat and steam are not
This is the phase where people get nervous, then accidentally sabotage their results. You’ll usually see dryness and flaking. Some areas can look patchy or lighter. That’s part of the process. Let flakes fall on their own. If you pick, you can lift pigment before it settles.
Avoid these for at least 7 to 10 days
- Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and long baths (water saturation is a big one)
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Heavy workouts that cause sweating (more on gym timing below)
- Makeup directly on the treated brows or along the lash line
- Touching the area with unwashed hands
If you live around Hyde Park and you’re commuting off Hyde Park Road or Highway 401, keep your routine simple so you actually stick with it. A quick saline cleanse, a gentle pat dry, then your thin ointment layer if I’ve advised it. That’s it. No extra products, no experimenting.
In summer, London heat can sneak up on you. Even a long walk outdoors can turn into a sweaty day. Try to plan your first week away from long outdoor events. Once you’re fully healed, SPF becomes your best friend for keeping pigment looking fresh.
The “product pause” that protects pigment for 4 weeks
After permanent makeup, your skin needs time to settle. I recommend a pause on strong actives and aggressive treatments near the area for about 4 weeks. That includes retinol, chemical exfoliants, and chemical peels around the brows or eye area. I also recommend avoiding laser treatments near the treated area in that same window.
Keep your routine basic. Clean hands. Gentle cleansing. No scrubs. No acids. No “just one swipe” with a harsh toner. When you’re healed, daily SPF helps protect your result long-term, especially if you’re outdoors a lot in London, ON.
A note on ointment: Use only what I recommend and keep it thin. Switching products mid-heal is one of the fastest ways to end up irritated and confused about what caused it.
When the color “disappears, ” and when to plan your touch-up (weeks 4 to 8)
A common panic moment happens after the flaking phase: your brows or eyeliner can look too light, uneven, or like the pigment vanished. That’s usually temporary. The skin is still healing and the pigment is still settling. Full settling often takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Touch-ups are usually scheduled around 6 to 8 weeks. That timing gives your skin enough time to show the true healed result so I can refine shape, depth, and any spots that healed lighter. If you try to “fix it” too early, you can irritate the skin and make it harder to get an even result.
I work with clients across London, Komoka, Arva, Dorchester, Lambeth, and Mount Brydges, and the theme is always the same. The easiest touch-up appointments happen when the first week was calm and consistent.
Normal healing vs. red flags, and how I support you in between
A little redness, tenderness, and flaking can be normal. So can that “tight” feeling. What I don’t want you to ignore is excessive redness, pus-like drainage, or fever. If you’re worried, reach out. It’s always easier to talk through a concern early than to wait and hope it goes away.

That’s how I work. I’d rather you feel clear on what you’re seeing day to day than try to guess your way through healing. If you’re in Hyde Park and your routine needs to fit a busy household or a commute, tell me. I’ll keep the plan practical.
If you haven’t booked yet: I start with a 30-minute permanent makeup consultation so we can talk through your goals, confirm you’re a good candidate, and make sure you’re comfortable with the healing timeline and aftercare before any procedure.

Permanent Makeup aftercare FAQs (the ones I get every week)
How long does permanent makeup take to heal?
Most surface healing happens in about 7 to 10 days, which is when flaking usually resolves. The pigment keeps settling under the skin for about 4 to 6 weeks, so the final color and softness take time.
Can I shower after getting permanent makeup?
Yes, but keep it smart. I recommend avoiding direct spray on the area and avoiding long, steamy showers in the first week. Cleanse gently as advised, pat dry, and don’t let the area get waterlogged.
Can I exercise or go to the gym after permanent makeup?
I generally recommend skipping heavy exercise that causes sweating for at least 7 to 10 days. Sweat and friction can irritate healing skin and can affect pigment retention. If you’re a regular gym-goer, plan a lighter week with walking and low-sweat activity.
When can I wear makeup over my permanent eyebrows or eyeliner?
Avoid applying makeup directly on the treated area during the first week while the skin is flaking and sealing. If you need to wear face makeup, keep it off the treated brows or lash line and remove it gently. If you’re unsure, ask me and I’ll guide you based on how you’re healing.
When should I schedule my permanent makeup touch-up?
Touch-ups are usually scheduled at about 6 to 8 weeks. That timing matters because your skin needs time to fully settle so I can refine the result without overworking fresh healing tissue.
