Microdermabrasion aftercare first week do's and don'ts for a microderm facial in London Ontario

After a microdermabrasion facial, the single most important rule is simple: keep your skin calm. That means gentle cleansing, steady hydration, and serious sun protection for the first 24 to 72 hours. I’m saying that as someone who’s watched people get their best glow when I take my time and really clean out congestion, including thorough extractions. When you protect that freshly exfoliated surface, you’re much more likely to see the smoother, clearer look many of my London clients notice a few days later.

First 24–48 hours after a microderm facial: the rules that actually matter

Microdermabrasion is non-invasive, but it still leaves your skin more exposed than usual. I generally recommend you treat the first 1 to 2 days like a reset window. Simple is better.

Do this right away: cleanse gently, moisturize generously, and apply a broad-spectrum mineral SPF every morning. In Hyde Park and across London, ON, summer UV and humidity can hit hard, so I take sun and sweat seriously, especially in August.

Do’s (keep it calm)

  • Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser using lukewarm water.
  • Moisturize with a calming, non-comedogenic moisturizer to support your skin barrier.
  • Use mineral SPF daily and reapply if you’re outdoors.

Don’ts (these are the usual troublemakers)

  • Skip makeup for the first 24 hours. If you absolutely need it after that, keep it light and clean your brushes or sponges.
  • Avoid heavy sweating and heat exposure for 24 to 72 hours. That includes hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, and long, hot showers.
  • Don’t use retinol, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, scrubs, or exfoliating brushes.
  • Hands off. No picking at dry bits or “flaky” spots.

Days 2–7: keep your smooth results and avoid the sneaky setbacks

A lot of people feel great right away, then accidentally mess with their results mid-week. The most common pattern I see is someone goes right back to “normal” skincare too quickly, especially actives. Give your skin the week.

If I did extractions during your facial, that area in particular needs a little patience. One client told me she appreciated that I took my time with every step instead of rushing, and that’s exactly why I’m picky about aftercare too. The calmer you keep things, the more likely you are to see that smoother, clearer, healthier look in the days that follow.

Hyde Park and London summer reminder: even a quick stop after your appointment that turns into heat and sweat can leave skin irritated. If you can, book a time that lets you head home after. I see a lot of people love a quick post-commute slot off Hyde Park Road, or a midday appointment before a run to Masonville Place.

  • Sun: avoid direct sun for at least a week and wear mineral SPF daily to lower the risk of post-treatment dark spots.
  • Sweat: keep workouts lighter until your skin feels fully settled. Sweat plus friction can set you back.
  • Actives: hold off on retinol, acids, benzoyl peroxide, and exfoliation for at least 7 days.
  • Touching: don’t pick. If you see dryness, add moisturizer, not more exfoliation.

The simple product plan I want you on for 7 days (no guessing)

I keep aftercare product advice very basic on purpose. Your skin just got a deep polish, and now we protect it.

AM: gentle cleanse + calming moisturizer + mineral SPF

Make SPF your non-negotiable. If you’re in and out of the car, walking the dog, or on a patio, you’re getting UV.

PM: gentle cleanse + moisturizer (a little extra if you feel dry)

Skip toners with alcohol, “tingly” serums, and anything fragranced this week.

If you’re tempted to add masks, peels, or “brightening” products, pause. Microdermabrasion already boosted product absorption. That’s great when you’re using barrier-friendly products and not so great when you jump back into actives too fast.

Red flags vs normal: when to call me (and how I support you after)

A little pinkness, mild tightness, and a bit of dryness can be normal after a microdermabrasion facial. It often settles quickly when you stick to gentle care.

Reach out to me right away if you have prolonged redness that isn’t improving, noticeable swelling, pus, or unusual pain. I’d rather you check in and we calm it down early than try to push through it.

I work with a lot of people who are nervous to trust anyone with their skin. I get it. My goal is always to keep you comfortable, explain things clearly, and give you advice that makes sense for your real life. I also support clients across London, Komoka, Arva, Dorchester, Lambeth, and Mount Brydges, so if you’re not right around Hyde Park, you can still get follow-up guidance by phone, or pop into the clinic if you need me to take a look.

Mild redness often settles within 24 to 48 hours. Light dryness or a slightly rough feel can show up over the next few days, especially if we did extractions. If redness is getting worse instead of better, or you notice swelling, pus, or unusual pain, let me know right away so I can guide you.

I generally recommend no makeup for the first 24 hours. After that, if your skin feels calm, you can wear light makeup, but keep it clean and avoid heavy, pore-clogging products. Clean brushes and sponges matter more than people think in that first week.

I recommend skipping heavy sweating for 24 to 72 hours. Heat, sweat, and friction can irritate freshly exfoliated skin. If you do move your body, keep it lighter, and wash gently afterward with a mild cleanser.

Hold off for at least 7 days on retinol, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs, and benzoyl peroxide. Your skin is already exfoliated, and adding actives too soon is one of the fastest ways to end up irritated or overly dry.

I generally recommend avoiding hot tubs, saunas, and other high-heat, high-moisture environments for 24 to 72 hours. Swimming can also be irritating because of chlorine and bacteria exposure. If you want a specific timeline based on how your skin looks that day, call me and I’ll talk you through it.

A microderm facial, also called microdermabrasion, is a non-invasive exfoliating treatment that removes the outer layer of dead skin. I use it to help smooth texture and support a brighter look, and many people love it for the way it helps with the look of fine lines, acne scarring, and uneven texture. It’s also great for improving how well your skincare absorbs afterward, as long as you stick to gentle products during that first week.
